The Danish national tyre collection scheme is probably the most climate and environment-friendly tyre collection scheme in the world.

Introduced back in 1995, the Danish tyre collection scheme was the very first such scheme in the world. At that time, focus was environmental remediation and clean-up of landfills with scrap tyres.

In contrast to most other collection schemes, which are based on producer responsibility, the Danish system is a levy-based system, charging a fixed levy on all tyres brought into the Danish market. The collected levies are pooled into a public fund supervised by the tax authorities, and the Ministry of the Environment lays down the rules for the distribution of funds to private collectors of end-of-life tyres (ELTs) from garages and recycling centres.

From the word go, the system proved extremely efficient, and all used tyres were collected. There are no incentives for neither private consumers nor garage owners not to have their old tyres recycled, as all collection and processing costs are paid up front at the time when tyres are brought into the market.

With effect from July 2017, the Danish Ministry of the Environment has again pioneered and taken the next step in relation to environment-friendly tyre collection and recycling. The processing of tyres into new raw material entails significant climate-related benefits in comparison with incineration (energy recovery). These benefits are now reflected in the reimbursing of levies from the tyre collection pool. The higher the recycling percentage achieved by the tyre processing company, the higher the fee per tonne reimbursed to the tyre collector.

It thus now truly matters, not only that all used tyres are collected – but also how they are further processed. The more climate and environment-friendly the technology of the processor/recycler, the more the collector will receive from the fund.

The Danish Ministry of the Environment has certified Genan with a recycling rate that represents the percentage of rubber and steel recovered through Genan technology. The remaining textile (residual) fraction is currently incinerated in cement kilns for energy recovery. It is high priority for the product and technology developers at Genan to define and develop new applications and markets for this fraction – and gradually bring the recycling rate up to 100%.


Independent Studies Clear Rubber Infill

Over the past decade, concerns that rubber infill made from end-of-life tyres (ELTs) should pose a potential health risk have now and then been raised in the media. Contentions have been that people who are exposed to rubber infill used in artificial turf face an increased risk of developing cancer, as the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contained in ELT infill are carcinogenic. However, these speculations are not evidence-based. Ample scientific evidence has established that rubber infill made from end-of-life tyres does not pose any elevated health risk.

Strong Evidence of Safety
Previous reports published by a wide range of governmental agencies and academic institutions have all confirmed that there is no elevated health risk related to the use of rubber infill made from end-of-life tyres in artificial turf pitches.

More than 100 scientific studies worldwide, undertaken by independent experts, have all validated the environmental as well as health-related safety of rubber granulate – and confirmed that these materials are indeed suitable for their intended use in artificial sports surfaces, playgrounds, landscaping and many other industrial processes.

RIVM and ECHA Studies Clear Rubber Infill
On 20 December 2016, new research was released by the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), underpinning the conclusions of previous research. According to the RIVM report, the effect on human health of substances contained in rubber infill is “virtually negligible” – and there is no cause for concern. In other words, the study found that it is safe to play football and other sports on artificial turf fields with rubber infill made from end-of-life tyres.

Concurrently with the RIVM investigation, the EU also initiated a study. This study was to be carried out by the European Chemical Agency (ECHA), honouring the “precautionary principle” stated in the EU Treaty stating that any suspected risk raised must be investigated.

On 28 February 2017, ECHA published its findings in an in-depth assessment of the use of rubber infill made from end-of-life tyres in artificial turf pitches. Results were as clear as the conclusion of the RIVM report, finding “at most, a very low level of concern from exposure to recycled rubber granules”.

The FIFA Medical Committee Concludes “no Evidence of Link”
In April 2017, the FIFA Medical Committee issued a statement summing up conclusions of existing research on this topic. FIFA concludes that “newer studies have confirmed the previous findings that there is no evidence of link between contracting cancer and playing on artificial turf with SBR infill.”
