International environmental company Genan was in 2020 less impacted by the Corona crisis than expected. Turnover dropped marginally by 6% to EUR 49m, while EBITDA decreased by 2% to just under EUR 12m. Nevertheless, thanks to significantly increasing market focus on sustainability, the Genan group is generally performing well – and now adding a resource in sales and marketing.
We are pleased to introduce Thomas Ballegaard as new Group CCO at Genan.
Thomas will join the Genan team on Monday 1 March 2021, taking on the overall responsibility for European Sales as well as for global marketing and product management.
Having worked as CCO for STARCO for 4 years from 2015 to 2019, Thomas has direct experience in the tyre business – as well as with the responsibilities that come with the title as Chief Commercial Officer.
We thus look very much forward to welcoming Thomas as part of the Genan team – and to benefitting from his expertise and enthusiasm.
Vulkan, an innovative, German start-up, has entered the German market with a brand new product: a sandal with a sole made of 100% GENAN recycled rubber granulate from end-of-life tyres – and a thin top sole made from recycled polyester as footbed. – A visionary sustainability initiative and an innovative application where the excellent properties of ELT rubber are put to good use.
“In the Corona period I built a sandal out of a tyre granulate mat myself. I was impressed by the properties of the tyres. The material is flexible, durable and recycled. First I built the sandals for friends and family. Since then, I started selling the sandals and now I’m sold out every month,” Founder of Vulkan David Bredt explains and continues:
“In addition to new models of sandals, I have just launched a shirt made from recycled plastics. And all for affordable prices so that products that are good for our planet can also be used.”

In the EU, approx. 40 million end-of-life tyres are recycled into infill for artificial turf each year. Thanks to this sustainable upcycling, the climate is spared 280,000 tonnes of CO2. If these worn-out tyres were instead incinerated, no less than 145 million trees would have to be planted in order to neutralise the increased CO2 emission.

2019 was a good year for the Genan Group, and the annual report shows progress on all parameters. Turnover has improved by 14% to record high EUR 52m, and the result for the year has increased to more than EUR 6.1m.
At Genan, we enjoy working together with our customers to develop brand new applications for recycled material from end-of-life tyres. Using recycled rubber from GENAN, RAMfit has developed the RAM, a versatile and sustainable training tool. The RAM is an excellent example of how recycled rubber can be reused for functional, durable and effective products – for the benefit both people and planet!
Keeping rubber granulate on the artificial turf pitch is paramount. For the sake of nature – but also to keep the need for granulate refill at an absolute minimum.
Fortunately, relatively simple measures make a huge difference, and we can all do something!

The Danish national tyre collection scheme is probably the most climate and environment-friendly tyre collection scheme in the world.
Introduced back in 1995, the Danish tyre collection scheme was the very first such scheme in the world. At that time, focus was environmental remediation and clean-up of landfills with scrap tyres.
In contrast to most other collection schemes, which are based on producer responsibility, the Danish system is a levy-based system, charging a fixed levy on all tyres brought into the Danish market. The collected levies are pooled into a public fund supervised by the tax authorities, and the Ministry of the Environment lays down the rules for the distribution of funds to private collectors of end-of-life tyres (ELTs) from garages and recycling centres.
From the word go, the system proved extremely efficient, and all used tyres were collected. There are no incentives for neither private consumers nor garage owners not to have their old tyres recycled, as all collection and processing costs are paid up front at the time when tyres are brought into the market.
With effect from July 2017, the Danish Ministry of the Environment has again pioneered and taken the next step in relation to environment-friendly tyre collection and recycling. The processing of tyres into new raw material entails significant climate-related benefits in comparison with incineration (energy recovery). These benefits are now reflected in the reimbursing of levies from the tyre collection pool. The higher the recycling percentage achieved by the tyre processing company, the higher the fee per tonne reimbursed to the tyre collector.
It thus now truly matters, not only that all used tyres are collected – but also how they are further processed. The more climate and environment-friendly the technology of the processor/recycler, the more the collector will receive from the fund.
The Danish Ministry of the Environment has certified Genan with a recycling rate that represents the percentage of rubber and steel recovered through Genan technology. The remaining textile (residual) fraction is currently incinerated in cement kilns for energy recovery. It is high priority for the product and technology developers at Genan to define and develop new applications and markets for this fraction – and gradually bring the recycling rate up to 100%.
