Genan’s vision clearly states that all scrap tyres must be recycled in the environmentally and economically most beneficial way. This means that all output from the recycling has to be used again for high-value applications and not incinerated.
To reach this goal, the final step is still lacking. The textile fraction, which accounts for 14% of the output from the Genan plants, is currently incinerated in cement kilns. There is, however, intense product development going on in order to finalise applications which will use the textile for much better and much more environmental and economical beneficial purposes.
Textile from scrap tyres has already been proved to contain excellent insulation properties compared to e.g. stone wool and mineral wool. However, the resulting products still remain to be properly tested and approved for the dedicated applications.
