Health and safety
The introduction of artificial turf has generally been received very positively among sports organisations, clubs, players and public institutions. However, all new products that come in contact with humans and the environment have to be tested thoroughly. No infill material has been tested by so many independent researchers as rubber granulate from scrap tyres.
Rubber granulate infill from scrap tyres has been subject to discussions and several environmental studies in different countries. A large number of investigations and scientific studies in e.g. the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Denmark and the USA have concluded that no health or environmental risk is connected with the use of rubber granulate infill from scrap tyres. Based on the available literature on exposure to rubber infill by swallowing, inhalation and skin contact and exposure, it has been concluded that there is no significant health risk for football players from the presence of rubber infill from scrap tyres in the artificial turf.
Please note that rubber granulate from other sources than tyres (so-called “industrial rubber” which can have its origin from a great variety of sources) has not been analysed, and we therefore clearly recommend using infill from scrap tyres as the environmental consequences are well known.
